Every one of the seventeen characters occupies a defined position with a defined job, set by an international standard that applies to every manufacturer selling into regulated markets. Positions one to three: who built the car and where

The first three characters form the World Manufacturer Identifier. The first character identifies the region and country of final assembly, the second and third narrow it to the manufacturer and, on higher-volume makers, the specific division. A car built late in one year may be registered in the next, and on a used listing the registration date is usually what is quoted. Position eleven identifies the assembly plant, narrowing the country established by the first character to a specific facility.

The final six characters are the sequential production number, unique to that one vehicle.
