A DM-i plug-in hybrid: what the powertrain code means for you

DM-i is BYD's plug-in hybrid system, pairing a combustion engine with a drivable electric powertrain and a battery that can be charged from a plug. That means fuel, oil services, an exhaust system and a charging routine all in the same car — a very different ownership and servicing picture from a battery-electric SUV.

Characters four to eight of the VIN encode the powertrain family, so the decode establishes the build without relying on a listing that may have been translated twice before it reached you. On an export vehicle with limited local documentation, that independence is the point.

Positions one to three are the World Manufacturer Identifier and resolve manufacturer and country of final assembly.
