BYD Dolphin Warranty: Dolphin, Dolphin Surf and Dolphin G

The Dolphin name now covers three cars: the Dolphin electric hatchback, the smaller Dolphin Surf (the European Seagull) and, in the UK, the Dolphin G DM-i plug-in hybrid. All of them get BYD's 6-year vehicle and 8-year battery warranty. Here is how the terms work for each and what to check before buying a used one.

Used cars keep the balance from the first delivery date. Australian terms are backdated to cars delivered since August 2022.

Dolphin

The Dolphin uses a 44.9 kWh or 60.4 kWh Blade (LFP) battery. Both sizes get the same 8-year battery warranty with a 70% state-of-health minimum, so a cheaper short-range Dolphin is just as well covered as the long-range car. In Australia the Dolphin has been on sale since 2023 and is BYD's entry hatchback above the Atto 1.

Dolphin Surf

The Dolphin Surf is a different, smaller car — the European version of the Seagull — and the cheapest BYD in the UK. It is listed under the same European warranty terms as the rest of the range. In Australia the same car is sold as the Atto 1, with the Australian 6-year / 150,000 km and 8-year / 160,000 km terms.

Dolphin G DM-i

The Dolphin G DM-i is a plug-in hybrid version launched in the UK in 2026. Since January 2026 BYD's European high-voltage battery limit of 8 years / 250,000 km covers plug-in hybrids too. It has a petrol engine, so it needs the hybrid service schedule rather than the EV one.

Dolphin recalls

In September 2024 BYD recalled 96,714 Dolphin and Yuan Plus cars built in China between November 2022 and December 2023 for a steering-controller fault. The recall applied to the Chinese market only — Australian and UK cars were not affected — but a privately imported Chinese-market Dolphin could be. Recall work is free whether or not the car is still under warranty.

Checking a used Dolphin

Decode the VIN to confirm the version and battery size — listings often confuse the Dolphin and the Dolphin Surf — and the build date and market. Ask a BYD dealer for the warranty start date, open recalls and a battery health report, and ask the seller for every service invoice.

FAQ

How long is the BYD Dolphin warranty?

6 years on the car and 8 years on the battery and drive unit. UK limits are 93,750 miles and 155,000 miles (250,000 km); Australian limits are 150,000 km and 160,000 km.

Does the Dolphin Surf have the same warranty as the Dolphin?

In the UK, yes — it is listed under the same European terms. In Australia the same car is sold as the Atto 1 with the Australian terms.

Is the Dolphin battery warranty the same for the short-range version?

Yes. Both battery sizes get the 8-year warranty with a 70% state-of-health minimum.

Does the Dolphin warranty transfer to a new owner?
