BYD Recalls in Australia: What's Been Recalled and How to Check Your VIN
The biggest BYD recall in Australia so far is the September 2026 Shark 6 spare-wheel recall, covering 32,009 utes. The earlier one most owners ask about is the 2022 Atto 3 child-restraint and airbag-switch recall. Several large BYD recalls in China did not apply to Australian cars. To check a specific BYD, enter its VIN on BYD Australia's vehicle recall page or search vehiclerecalls.gov.au.

Check vehiclerecalls.gov.au for the full current list. China-only recalls can still affect a privately imported Chinese-market BYD.
Shark 6 spare-wheel recall (September 2026)
BYD recalled 32,009 Shark 6 utes built between 29 August 2024 and 15 June 2026 — 28,543 Premium, 2,100 Performance and 1,366 Dynamic cab-chassis. Incorrect installation, tray positioning or fastening torque can wear the spare-wheel support cable until it fails and the wheel detaches, a hazard to other road users. BYD replaces the spare-wheel lifter assembly with an updated design for free; the job takes about 30 minutes. Until then, BYD advises removing the spare wheel (the steps are in the owner's handbook).
Atto 3 child-restraint and airbag-switch recall (2022)
703 early Atto 3s were recalled because the rear-centre child-restraint anchorage needed a modification and the front passenger airbag switch could be turned off unintentionally. Until repaired, owners were told not to fit a child seat in the rear-centre position and not to switch off the passenger airbag. BYD contacts owners to book the free modification — on a used 2022 Atto 3, ask for proof it was done.
Big China recalls that don't apply here
Three large recalls in China — 96,714 Yuan Plus and Dolphin cars in September 2024, 115,783 Tang and Yuan Pro cars in October 2025, and 88,981 Qin Plus DM-i in November 2025 — covered Chinese-market cars only; BYD's Australian distributor said local cars were not affected. A grey import built for China is a different story: match its model and build date against the Chinese notices.
The 2026 build-date issue isn't a recall
In 2026 BYD Australia found that about 1,200 Atto 3, Sealion 8 and Shark 6 vehicles built in 2025 had been sold as 2026 builds. It is a compliance and value issue, not a safety recall: BYD offered A$3,500 compensation, a refund or a replacement. The VIN and compliance plate show the real build date.
How to check a BYD recall by VIN in Australia
Find the 17-character VIN on the windscreen base, the driver's door pillar or the registration papers. Enter it on BYD Australia's vehicle recall page, or call BYD Customer Care on 1800 888 293. Search vehiclerecalls.gov.au by make and model for the official notices. Recall repairs are free at a BYD dealer whether or not the car is under warranty; when buying used, ask the seller for proof that recall work was done.
