BYD Shark 6 Warranty: What's Covered on BYD's Plug-in Hybrid Ute

In Australia the Shark 6 gets the same warranty as BYD's passenger cars: 6 years / 150,000 km on the vehicle and 8 years / 160,000 km on the high-voltage battery and drive unit, with the battery guaranteed to keep at least 70% state of health. Utes work harder than cars, though, so how a Shark 6 has been used — towing, payload, off-road and accessories — matters more to a warranty claim.

The September 2026 spare-wheel recall

In September 2026 BYD recalled 32,009 Shark 6 utes in Australia because the spare-wheel support cable can wear and the spare wheel can detach. Affected builds run from 29 August 2024 to 15 June 2026 across the Premium, Performance and Dynamic cab-chassis. The fix is a free replacement spare-wheel lifter assembly; until it is done, BYD advises removing the spare wheel. Enter the VIN on BYD Australia's vehicle recall page to check a specific ute.

Towing, payload and work use

Damage caused by exceeding the ute's ratings is not covered — braked towing is 2,500 kg on most versions (check the plate on yours) and payload is roughly 725–900 kg depending on version. Rideshare, rental and other commercial or fleet use can come with different warranty terms, so ask what applies if a used Shark 6 worked for a business.

Accessories and modifications

Bull bars, lift kits, larger tyres and electrical accessories are popular on utes. An accessory doesn't void the whole warranty, but a fault caused by a non-approved modification won't be covered — and electrical add-ons on a plug-in hybrid deserve extra care. Keep receipts and use an installer who works to BYD's specifications.

Servicing a plug-in hybrid ute

The Shark 6 has a petrol engine, so it needs more frequent servicing than BYD's electric cars. Follow the schedule in the handbook and keep every invoice; in Australia you can use an independent workshop as long as the servicing is on schedule and documented.

Build date and used checks

The Shark 6 was one of the models in BYD Australia's 2026 build-date mix-up, where some 2025-built vehicles were sold as 2026 builds. Decode the VIN and check the compliance plate, confirm the warranty start date and recall status with a dealer, and ask how the ute was used.
