BYD Shark 6 vs Ford Ranger: Which Ute Should You Buy?
The Shark 6 undercuts the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid by more than A$14,000 and has more power and more than double the electric range. The Ranger tows 3,500 kg to the Shark 6's 2,500 kg on most versions, has a bigger dealer network and decades of trust — and the diesel Ranger remains the default for heavy work.

Price
The Shark 6 lists from A$55,900 (Dynamic cab-chassis) to A$62,900 (Performance) before on-road costs, with A$4,000 cashback to 21 December 2026. The Ranger PHEV launched from A$71,990 (XLT) to A$86,990 (Stormtrak). The cheapest comparison for many buyers is actually a diesel Ranger XLT, which costs about the same as a Shark 6 drive-away.
Power and electric driving
The Shark 6 makes 321 kW from its 1.5-litre turbo plug-in hybrid system and has a 29.58 kWh battery good for a claimed 100 km of electric driving. The Ranger PHEV pairs a 2.3-litre turbo petrol with a 75 kW motor for 207 kW and 697 Nm, with an 11.8 kWh battery. If most of your weekday driving is short, the Shark 6 can do far more of it without using petrol.
Towing and payload
This is where the Ranger wins. It is rated to tow 3,500 kg braked and carry up to 973 kg, against 2,500 kg and about 725–900 kg for most Shark 6 versions. If you tow a big caravan or boat, or work the ute hard, the Ranger is the safer choice — and exceeding a ute's ratings is not covered by any warranty.
Warranty and recalls
BYD gives 6 years / 150,000 km on the ute and 8 years / 160,000 km on the battery and drive unit; Ford gives 5 years / unlimited km. In September 2026 BYD recalled 32,009 Shark 6 utes for a spare-wheel lifter fault — check any used Shark 6 by VIN and ask for proof the free fix was done.
Which should you buy?
Buy the Shark 6 for lower running costs on short trips, more power and features for the money, and a longer warranty. Buy the Ranger — PHEV or diesel — if you tow over 2,500 kg, carry heavy loads, drive remote areas where dealer coverage matters, or want a proven resale record.
